Auto-maker FORD collecting GPS-data – with NSA-interface?

Jim Edwards, Deputy Editor at Business Insider, recently posted an article with the headline “Ford Exec: ‘We Know Everyone Who Breaks The Law’ Thanks To Our GPS In Your Car.”

In that text, Edwards mentions how an Executive of Ford said during a panel discussion, that the car manufacturer knows of its vehicles with GPS-systems installed, when those are speeding and where they are while they are doing it.

“We know everyone who breaks the law, we know when you’re doing it. We have GPS in your car, so we know what you’re doing. By the way, we don’t supply that data to anyone” – Jim Farley, Global VP Marketing & Sales Ford Motor Company

The idea of Farley, the Ford Executive, was actually, to point out that despite having all that data available at Ford, very little of it is actually used, to avoid privacy concerns.

Which triggers the question: if you are not going to use the data, then why even collect or have it at all and potentially become a victim of some (governmental) Hackers?

As beneficial as all those collected data-items are, sooner or later they are going to be used by the wrong people and or for the wrong purpose. After all, and Edward Snowden or Glenn Greenwald probably could say a word or two about that, if that data is being collected at Ford, chances are that the NSA already has some sort of access to it. But this is purely speculative from my end. I just assume that an agency who establishes access to private email and more of private individuals, will have no problem, forcing their way into a database with information of where those individuals’ cars are driving.

Big Brother is watching you and has been for a long time. Nothing new here. But the longer you think about it, the clearer one can see the potential extent of all that spying into one’s privacy. And all caused by our connected world. Sometimes, regression is the real progress. And, yeah, Barack Obama, that whole privacy-issue would be a chance for you to gain back points on the trust-o-meter so you’ll find your way into the history books not as just another President of the United States, but as the one who ended the Big-Brother-ish behavior and gave people back a sense of freedom they deserve.
